Binder
This binder will be very important in our classroom. This binder should be brought home every night and returned to school the next day. Students will have their conduct sheet, homework, study guides, Bible verse and spelling words in their binder at all times. You will need to sign their homework sheet each night saying that they read their reading material TO YOU. I will check their homework sheet every morning to make sure it has been completed. Homework will be part of their grade. The homework sheet will have their Bible verse for the week on it. It will also tell you when their tests are. They will have homework on Wednesday. They will have to read and study for tests but if you study throughout the week it will not be a lot of homework.
Any papers that need to be returned to school will be in the front pocket of the binder. Any papers that can stay at home will be in the back pocket of the binder. All money will need to be in envelope or bag labeled with student’s name and what it is for (ex. Lunch, field trip, snack, etc.).
Weekly Test Papers
I will send home graded papers every Tuesday. Please look over these papers and let me know if you have any questions or concerns. When you are done looking at the papers, place them ALL back in the envelope and fill out the front of the envelope. I will keep the papers here until the end of the semester. (If you want them at the end of the semester, please let me know.)
Test Schedule

Wednesday- Phonics
Thursday- Spelling Pre-test
Friday- Bible Verse Test, Spelling Test and Writing
We will rotate having History/ Science/ Health and Language tests on Thursdays throughout the year. I will always let them know when they are in advance. I will provide a study guide for the math, phonics, History/ Science/ Health and Language tests.
Writing Tests will be graded like this:
S- Satisfactory
I- Improvement
N- Needs Improvement
U- Unsatisfactory
Reading
They will have reading homework each night except for Friday. Make sure your child reads to you. LOOK AT THE STORY AS THEY READ IT SO YOU CAN CORRECT THEIR MISTAKES. This will help them become a great reader! I will also send home copies of the phonics charts. Please go over these each night! The better they know these charts, the better they will do on their phonics test and reading test.
In a few weeks, we will begin oral reading tests. Your child will read a text from our reading book and be timed for one minute. I will mark the mistakes and calculate the grade. The goal for September to October is 15-20 words per minute with as few mistakes as possible. The goal will increase at the beginning of November to 20-30 words per minute. Then it will increase again in February to 30-45 words per minute. Please remember that your child’s grade will include posture, attention, smoothness and expression. (See attached paper.)
Spelling
The spelling tests will start in a couple of weeks. Please look for a spelling list in your child’s binder every Monday. Your child should print the spelling words on the bottom of the page. The spelling list tells you to cut the top part off and just send the bottom home…don’t do that. Please leave it in their binder that way it won’t get lost. They will take their spelling test on Friday. A pre-test will be given on Thursday. If your child makes a 100 on Thursday they will not have to take the test again on Friday.
Conduct/ Rewards
Every day their stick will start in the green jar. They will be given plenty of verbal warnings and then they will be asked to move their stick. If they move their stick one time they are still in the green jar. After that, there are 2 yellow jars. Then, they will move to a red light. They will lose points based on how they misbehaved.
I like to reward your children for good behavior. If they have a green light at the end of the day, they will receive a piece of candy. I ask that the line leader for the week bring in a bag of candy (or other small treats) on Monday and we will add it to our jar. I will put a calendar in each child’s binder that tells who the line leader is plus important upcoming events.
You will soon hear your child talk about “Coosa Bucks”! I give out “Coosa Bucks” for different reasons. Sometimes it is for picking up trash without being asked, helping your friend, trying your best on a certain activity. When they get 10 “Coosa Bucks”, I let them get in the treasure box! (If you ever find small cheap toys and would like to donate them to the treasure box that would be great! J )
Conference
If a conference is needed, you will need to set it up in the office. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to write me a note first. Do not go straight to the office. The best way to communicate with me is by sending a note in their binder, sending an e-mail or a text.
